Stanford missed two late field goals including one that would have won in regulation in the waning seconds, allowing Oklahoma State to kick a field goal to win the Fiesta Bowl 41-38 in overtime. It was the Cowboys' first lead of the game.
The two powerful and hyped offenses took some time to warm up. Stanford missed an early field goal, and Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden was intercepted on his very first throw. The only score in the first quarter was Andrew Luck's 53-yard strike to Ty Montgomery for a 7-0 Stanford lead.
But the 2nd quarter was filled with many such big plays. The Cardinal increased the lead to 14-0 on a 24 yard Jeremy Stewart run.
But then Cowboy superstar Justin Blackmon, seemingly hobbled by a thigh infection, came alive. He caught a 43-yard touchdown strike from Weeden, then on the next drive he turned a simple first down throw into a 67-yard touchdown sprint. Just like that, the game was tied at 14.
Minutes later, however, Stanford was on the march again; Stepfan Taylor's 3-yard run made it 21-14.
Then Weeden led a drive late in the half and ran the ball in himself from 2 yards, his first rushing touchdown of the year. Halftime score: Stanford 21, Oklahoma State 21.
Stanford stopped Oklahoma State to start the 3rd quarter and then drove into the red zone, resulting in another TD pass from Luck to Zach Ertz for 15 yards and a 28-21 lead.
Later in the 3rd Cowboys caught a break but didn't fully capitalize. They trapped Stanford inside the ten with a punt, then the Cardinal fumbled the ball. But Oklahoma State couldn't find the end zone and settled for a field goal, cutting Stanford's lead to 28-24.
Stanford matched the field goal to extend their lead to 31-24 at the start of the 4th quarter, but it wasn't long before Justin Blackmon, silent in the 3rd quarter as well as the 1st, had another touchdown pass as Weeden found him for 17 yards to tie the game at 31.
The Cardinal retook the lead after capping a long drive with a another Taylor run from about the 1-foot line, the ball barely clearing the line in a pileup.
But it took Oklahoma State just a few minutes to tie the game again. Stanford forced a 4th and 3 in Cowboy territory, but another Weeden-to-Blackmon hookup made it look easy and a few plays later Joseph Randle ran it in from the 4 yard line.
Luck drove the team down the field for a game-winning field goal that kicker Jordan Williamson pulled to the left, marking only the 2nd time this year Stanford failed to score in the red zone. The game went into overtime.
Overtime: Stanford had a false start penalty then was stuffed for a loss, and had to attempt a field goal. Williamson missed again to the left.
On Oklahoma State's possession, Clinton Chelf caught what looked like a touchdown pass but he was ruled down at the half-yard line; Oklahoma State centered for the winning field goal, and Quinn Sharp made the chip shot for the win.
Oklahoma State finished 12-1 while Stanford fell to 11-2.

Stanford won the game start to finish, then they didnt trust the #1 NFL draft pick to put them in the end zone. Shameful.
