Alabama's defense staked its claim as one of the best of all-time, if not the best, shutting out LSU 21-0 in the teams' rematch contest and winning the BCS championship.
Alabama held LSU to fewer than 100 total yards for the game, completely stifling the run and never letting LSU's Jordan Jefferson get on track.
The Tide's offense didn't do much against LSU's defense, either, but Jeremy Shelley made five field goals and in the fourth quarter, Trent Richardson finally scored the first touchdown of either team in eight quarters. A.J. McCarron had success passing, completing 23 of 34 for 233 yards, but LSU's defense tightened on their side of the field, forcing kicks up until very near the end when Richardson had his 34-yard scoring run.
Alabama made one field goal in the first quarter; two in the second; and two more in the third. At 15-0, with 15 minutes left, there was more than enough time for a comeback, but LSU could do nothing all night, only crossing mid-field once. On that series, in the fourth quarter, LSU went backwards from the Alabama 32 and faced a 4th and 18; Jefferson was sacked and fumbled, and Alabama recovered.
Despite Jefferson's troubles—he also threw an ill-advised shovel pass that was intercepted—backup and former starter Jarrett Lee never took a snap. Although the team had some big comebacks this year, they couldn't do it this time, and Les Miles had nothing in his bag of tricks to change the outcome.
Alabama finishes 12-1, with wins over Arkansas and Penn State in addition to tonight's win and the earlier loss to the Tigers. LSU fell to 13-1, and has the more impressive résumé as far as wins and losses go, but the shutout—compared to the Tigers' earlier overtime win—means the Crimson Tide will likely be a unanimous #1 tomorrow morning.
