The SportsRatings Weekly Top 25 is a subjective ranking of the top 25 college football teams in the style of the AP or USA/Coaches poll. Our rankings properly reflect head-to-head results and give additional consideration to teams who have victories over other top 25 teams.
Even with three undefeated teams idle this week, two more—and very nearly a third—fell this week. #1 Alabama, #3 Louisiana State, and #4 Boise State didn't play this weekend, perhaps saving them from a scare of their own. Of course, either Alabama or LSU will lose on November 5th when the two teams meet. It could have been a meeting of #1 vs. #2, but #2 Stanford pulled out a triple-overtime win at USC to remain unbeaten. Even so, we were set to drop them to #3 for the scare, but they are one of two undefeated teams to have beaten two top 25 foes, so they remain at #2. #5 Oklahoma State had little trouble with Baylor's high-powered offense, winning 59-24.
Oregon moves up a spot to #6; they've won seven straight since losing to LSU. Nebraska and Oklahoma notched big wins and jump six spots each. Both teams have two top 25 wins but Nebraska gets the edge since their loss is to a top 25 team. They beat Michigan State 24-3 while Oklahoma crushed previously unbeated Kansas State 58-17. Arkansas holds at #9 after a tepid comeback win over Vanderbilt, while Clemson—the other unbeaten that fell—drops to #10 after losing 31-17 to Georgia Tech.

Penn State makes a big jump from #19 to #11 after beating Illinois 10-7 and knocking the Illini out of the rankings. Their move wasn't so much from the win as from the fact that their sole loss is to #1 Alabama, which puts them on par with #9 Arkansas and #12 Virginia Tech, who lost only to Clemson (and barely escaped Duke this weekend). South Carolina moves to #13 after beating Tennessee 14-3, and Houston follows at #14. The Cougars remained unbeaten by dispatching Rice 73-34.
Michigan State and Wisconsin both lost, and drop 5 spots each. The Spartans fell to Nebraska while the Badgers lost their 2nd straight game, both road games decided by a long touchdown pass late in the game. Michigan holds at #17, while Kansas State drops to #18 due to their blowout loss to Oklahoma.
Arizona State beat Colorado 48-14 this weekend and moves up to #19; the Sun Devils previously beat Southern Cal 43-22, so the 6-2 Trojans fall below them to #22. One spot ahead at #21 is Georgia, who was ranked #26 pre-season but never made our top 25 until now. Both USC and the Bulldogs have two losses to top 25 teams. Re-entering at #20 is Georgia Tech; the Yellow Jackets fell out last week but their win over Clemson puts them back in.
#23 Cincinnati was idle and #24 Southern Miss beat UTEP. Tied at #25 are two more teams that, like USC and Georgia, have only lost to ranked teams. But Texas and Washington both have a huge blowout loss on their résumé, relegating them to sharing the #25 spot.
Texas A&M's third close loss dumps them from the rankings, and Texas Tech was embarrassed by Iowa State 41-7 on the weekend following their huge upset of Oklahoma. Illinois dropped their third game in a row after starting 6-0.
