Welcome to the SportsRatings College Football Top 25 for the week ending September 18, 2010. This is a subjective ranking, not a computer power rating. It does attempt to use several rules some of which include honoring head-to-head results whenever possible, and giving more consideration to teams with wins over other top 25 teams.
In week three, every team in the top ten was impressive in one way or another, leading to a difficult and minor reshuffling of teams.
#1 Boise State handled Wyoming on the road easily, 51-6. This surpassed Texas' home win over the Cowboys (34-7) and gave us no reason to tinked with the Broncos #1 rating—for now. TCU faces Wyoming at home on October 9th and they'll have to be similarly dominant to stick around the very top slots. Their 45-10 win over Baylor was good enough to hold on to #2.
#3 Oregon led 69-0 after three quarters and that was the final over I-AA Portland State, who was 2-9 last season. Alabama slaughtered Duke 62-13 and moves up a spot ahead of #5 Oklahoma, who struggled with #21 Air Force at home but prevailed 27-24. One one hand, that's twice that the Sooners have had trouble at home but on the other hand they're the only team with two wins over top 25 teams, so they stay in the top five.

Nebraska jumps from #8 to #6 after pulling away from Washington 56-21 in Seattle. They jump #7 Ohio State who was very solid against Ohio, leading 34-0 at the half. The Buckeyes have a strong win over Miami, enough to move them ahead of Arkansas. The Razorbacks fall from #6 to #8 after almost losing to Georgia; however, the last-minute road SEC win would be considered a triumph for most teams.
Stanford continued to impress with a 68-24 crushing of Wake Forest, moving them ahead of #10 Florida. The Gators beat Tennessee 31-17, a lot less convincing than Oregon's 48-13 win a week earlier, but still a road SEC victory in a rivalry game.
Texas had the "upset" of the week in our rankings, beating former #11 Texas Tech and replacing them at that spot while the Red Raiders fall to #19 for losing at home. Auburn moves up two spots to #12 after edging Clemson in overtime; the losing Tigers drop just one spot from #19 to #20. In between the two Tiger teams, South Carolina and LSU move up three spots while Wisconsin drops three from #12 to #15. The Badgers needed a blocked extra point to preserve a 20-19 win over Arizona State. Texas A&M falls a spot to #16 after barely beating Florida International 27-20. Miami was idle and slides up to #17, and Utah moves up to #18 after taking their turn at crushing New Mexico, 56-14.
Air Force holds at #21 with the Oklahoma loss; they did a lot better against the Sooners than #22 Florida State. The Seminoles, like the Falcons earlier, defeated BYU easily 34-10.
Two weeks ago the #24 and #25 teams in the rankings lost, and it happened again this week. #24 California was manhandled by Nevada 52-31 and the Wolf Pack debut at #23. #25 Iowa fell behind Arizona 27-7 at the half but managed to tie the game before falling 34-27; the Wildcats enter at #24. A spot opened up with North Carolina suffering their second 30-24 loss and USC makes their 2010 debut. The Trojans were #37 pre-season and probably haven't even lived up to that with three tepid victories, but two of them were on the road and they were the choice among the dozen or so undefeated teams remaining that aren't already ranked. Given the track record of the #25 teams (none are still in the rankings) the Trojans have their work cut out for them.
