Same top five as usual, different order. This week it was Villanova's turn to lose, and the Wildcats dropped two games to fall from #2 to #5. #1 Kansas increased their record to 26-1, as did new #2 Kentucky who continued their cardiac-kid season by beating Mississippi at home in overtime, then topping Vanderbilt on the road by 2.
Purdue and Syracuse each padded their résumés with big road wins, the Boilermakers beating Ohio State and the Orange defeating Georgetown. Each is now in sole possession of the lead of its respective Big Six conference.
After losing at home to Connecticut, Villanova went on the road and lost a close game to Pitt. At 22-4 and two wins over top 25 opponents, they remain a hair ahead of Kansas State, also 22-4, who has more losses to non-top 25 foes. The Mountain West again has two top ten teams, #7 New Mexico and #9 BYU, both now 25-3 and battling for the lead in the conference. #8 Duke holds in place after a good win over Virginia Tech; the Blue Devils lead the ACC outright.
West Virginia slides back into the top ten, followed by Georgetown, who lost to Syracuse. The Hoyas now have seven losses, four to unranked teams, and five wins over ranked teams.

The next five slots belong to the mid-majors, many of whom make big moves up. #12 Temple is in the thick of a big battle for the Atlantic 10 regular-season title; Butler of the Horizon League zooms up six spots to #13 and is undefeated in conference play; Murray State, up four to #14, remains undefeated in Ohio Valley play and is 26-3 overall; perennial top 25 favorite Gonzaga lost a shocker to Loyola Marymount but still controls the West Coast Conference; and 24-3 Northern Iowa jumps to #16.
The teams that lost to clear the way for the mid-majors included #17 Vanderbilt (lost to Kentucky), #18 Baylor (to Oklahoma State), #19 Texas (to Oklahoma), and #21 Virginia Tech (to Duke). Pittsburgh bucked the trend by beating Villanova, and moves up to #20, just behind the Longhorns who beat them early in the season. Tennessee also won twice and stays in at 24.
The Big Ten is still wide open, but three challengers had major setbacks. Wisconsin was upset in a big way by Minnesota. Meanwhile Michigan State lost to Ohio State but the Buckeyes then fell to Purdue. The Badgers are only in fourth place in the conference but swept the Buckeyes so they are #22 and Ohio State #23, while Michigan State just holds on at #25, falling into a tie with 23-4 Cornell.
No teams fell out this week.
