- Penn St. (Big Ten #10) Last year: 27-11 (#16) TPP Back: 56.3% Recruiting: #71
Key returnee: Talor Battle (#1 14.3 TPP/G)
Key loss: Jamelle Cornley (#2 11.9 TPP/G)
Analysis: Only #62 in Strength, winning the NIT pushed them to #16 in Success. Battle is back but two double-digit scorers leave, the Big Ten is improved, and the Nittany Lions' luck won't be as good this season. - Duquesne (Atl 10 #6) Last year: 21-13 (#74) TPP Back: 69.5% Recruiting: #156
Key returnee: Damian Saunders (#2 16.6 TPP/G)
Key loss: Aaron Jackson (#1 20.9 TPP/G)
Analysis: Jackson's 19.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.7 assists are gone; he accounted for 30% of the team's production alone. Four starters and most reserves are back; watch forward Rodrigo Peggau, a potential breakout player. - Jacksonville (Atl Sun #1) Last year: 18-14 (#186) TPP Back: 76.0% Recruiting: #186
Key returnee: Ben Smith (#1 14.0 TPP/G)
Key loss: Marcus Allen (#4 9.6 TPP/G)
Analysis: Jacksonville won the Atlantic Sun conference last year but fell come tournament time, going to the NIT. With four starters back from that team they should repeat as champs and have another shot to make the NCAA. - San Francisco (WCC #2) Last year: 11-19 (#256) TPP Back: 82.2% Recruiting: #132
Key returnee: Dior Lowhorn (#1 15.6 TPP/G)
Key loss: Manny Quezada (#4 7.7 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Dons are our surprise pick to nearly top the conference, thanks to having four starters back including Lowhorn (20.1 ppg), with transfer Rashad Green from Manhattan (7.8 pt, 5.0 reb) among several new faces. - Wichita State (MVC #4) Last year: 17-17 (#128) TPP Back: 64.4% Recruiting: #116
Key returnee: Clevin Hannah (#2 9.3 TPP/G)
Key loss: Ramon Clemente (#1 10.2 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Shockers have seven of their top nine players back, and acquire a starter-level player as Gabe Blair (ex-East Carolina, 7.7 pt, 6.9 reb) becomes eligible. The top of the league is still too tough, though. - Wofford (Southern #1) Last year: 16-14 (#190) TPP Back: 99.7% Recruiting: #333
Key returnee: Noah Dahlman (#1 16.4 TPP/G)
Key loss: Matt Estep (#10 0.7 TPP/G)
Analysis: Could Wofford really win the Southern conference? They've got all their starters back led by Noah Dahlman's 17.8 ppg, plus nearly every reserve, and they add transfer Cameron Rundles from Montana. - La Salle (Atl 10 #7) Last year: 18-13 (#96) TPP Back: 73.1% Recruiting: #107
Key returnee: Rodney Green (#1 13.6 TPP/G)
Key loss: Vernon Goodridge (#4 8.1 TPP/G)
Analysis: La Salle is a mixed bag; the Explorers return their top four scorers but lose all but a few reserves. Recruit Aaric Murray, a 6-10 center, is one of their best ever. If he breaks out as a freshman this team will be very good. - North Texas (Sun Belt #3) Last year: 20-12 (#131) TPP Back: 81.0% Recruiting: #235
Key returnee: Eric Tramile (#1 11.3 TPP/G)
Key loss: Adam McCoy (#6 6.2 TPP/G)
Analysis: Back are all five starters, including four players who averaged double digits in scoring. Only one key reserve returns, but the Mean Green add transfer Cameron Spencer from SMU and should finish high again in the Sun Belt. - Louisiana Tech (WAC #7) Last year: 15-18 (#197) TPP Back: 86.4% Recruiting: #120
Key returnee: Magnum Rolle (#1 12.2 TPP/G)
Key loss: Kenneth Cooper (#5 9.1 TPP/G)
Analysis: Of their six most productive players, the only loss is Cooper who played just half the season last year. The Bulldogs also bring in recruit Kadeem Coleby, a big forward with good potential. - Marshall (C-USA #3) Last year: 15-17 (#176) TPP Back: 70.3% Recruiting: #72
Key returnee: Tirrell Baines (#2 8.0 TPP/G)
Key loss: Markel Humphrey (#1 12.4 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Herd lose top scorer Humphrey but return the next seven most productive players in a balanced system. Two very good recruits join as well: Blue chip Hassan Whiteside (C 6-11 220) and guard DeAndre Kane (6-2 180). - South Dakota St. (Summit #2) Last year: 13-20 (#242) TPP Back: 97.4% Recruiting: #298
Key returnee: Anthony Cordova (#1 10.6 TPP/G)
Key loss: MacKenzie Casey (#8 1.8 TPP/G)
Analysis: With five starters back, Jackrabbits are looking for more than a respectable Summit standing and better overall record; they might be able to win the league and/or make the NCAA tournament with luck.
- Wisc. Milwaukee (Horizon #3) Last year: 17-14 (#113) TPP Back: 80.4% Recruiting: #194
Key returnee: James Eayrs (#1 9.6 TPP/G)
Key loss: Avery Smith (#2 8.3 TPP/G)
Analysis: Rob Jeter's system creates very balanced production, and six of the top seven players are back. The big loss is Smith, their 2nd-leading scorer. The Panthers will be better, but their record and conference showing might not reflect it. - Boston U. (Am East #1) Last year: 17-13 (#183) TPP Back: 85.5% Recruiting: #165
Key returnee: John Holland (#1 14.7 TPP/G)
Key loss: Matt Wolf (#4 6.2 TPP/G)
Analysis: Four of five starters return and seven of the top eight players for new coach Pat Chambers, putting the Terriers in the driver's seat of the American East conference. - Rhode Island (Atl 10 #8) Last year: 23-11 (#58) TPP Back: 61.2% Recruiting: #100
Key returnee: Delroy James (#3 10.0 TPP/G)
Key loss: Kahlem Seawright (#1 14.1 TPP/G)
Analysis: Three starters are back and seven of the top nine players—but the two missing are leading scorers Seawright (14.2 ppg) and Jimmy Baron (17.4). Seawright also led in rebounding while Baron was the top 3-point threat. - Lipscomb (Atl Sun #2) Last year: 17-14 (#224) TPP Back: 74.1% Recruiting: #204
Key returnee: Adnan Hodzic (#1 14.2 TPP/G)
Key loss: Michael Lusk (#5 8.3 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Bison return four starters including top scorer and rebounder Hodzic. Better still, two transfers become eligible to bolster their reserves, giving them a leg up in the Atlantic Sun race. - Nevada Las Vegas (Mtn West #4) Last year: 21-11 (#46) TPP Back: 36.9% Recruiting: #52
Key returnee: Tre'Von Willis (#3 8.5 TPP/G)
Key loss: Rene Rougeau (#1 13.7 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Rebels are depleted, losing three starters from last year's squad. Transfers from ASU, Kentucky, and UCLA gain eligibility, and strong recruits like Anthony Marshall (SG 6-3 200) come in. The play of these newcomers is key to UNLV's success. - IUPUI (Summit #3) Last year: 16-14 (#206) TPP Back: 85.1% Recruiting: #291
Key returnee: Robert Glenn (#1 13.0 TPP/G)
Key loss: Gary Patterson (#5 6.5 TPP/G)
Analysis: Last year the five starters scored between 9.2 and 13.9 per game for the Jags and four of them are back. IUPUI's balanced attack will continue to pay dividends and put them near the summit of the Summit. - Washington St. (Pac-10 #8) Last year: 17-16 (#69) TPP Back: 35.3% Recruiting: #42
Key returnee: Klay Thompson (#3 9.2 TPP/G)
Key loss: Aron Baynes (#1 14.2 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Huskies struggled to stay above .500 last year and lose three starters including top rebounder Baynes (7.5) and leading scorer Taylor Rochestie (13.2 ppg). Good recruiting will help but those players may need a year to develop. - Canisius (Metro Atl #3) Last year: 11-20 (#259) TPP Back: 97.8% Recruiting: #306
Key returnee: Frank Turner (#1 9.2 TPP/G)
Key loss: A.J. Hawkins (#9 1.5 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Griffins were better than their 11-20 finish last year, but not much. They've got everybody back and could make a big move this year. Leading scorer Turner (15.6 ppg) and top rebounder Greg Logins (7.0) lead the way. - Buffalo (MAC #2) Last year: 21-12 (#114) TPP Back: 64.3% Recruiting: #283
Key returnee: Calvin Betts (#2 8.9 TPP/G)
Key loss: Greg Gamble (#1 9.2 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Bulls have four starters back but Mitchell Watt and Titus Robinson played far fewer minutes than many reserves who departed. The result is that more than 1/3 of Buffalo's production is gone, but they'll still be a factor in the MAC. - Mount St. Mary's (Northeast #1) Last year: 19-14 (#202) TPP Back: 76.0% Recruiting: #221
Key returnee: Kelly Beidler (#1 11.1 TPP/G)
Key loss: Markus Mitchell (#4 6.7 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Mount lose two starters, but have all their reserves back from a team that nearly won 20 games last year. They'll make another strong run at winning the Northeast conference. - Rice (C-USA #4) Last year: 10-22 (#217) TPP Back: 67.4% Recruiting: #51
Key returnee: Trey Stanton (#1 6.9 TPP/G)
Key loss: Rodney Foster (#1 10.3 TPP/G)
Analysis: Foster averaged *exactly* 12 points and 3 rebounds last year for the Owls, who lose him and reserve Aleks Perka. But four starters return and the 2009 recruits could give the team a major boost. - Vermont (Am East #2) Last year: 24-9 (#116) TPP Back: 63.2% Recruiting: #150
Key returnee: Marqus Blakely (#1 19.0 TPP/G)
Key loss: Mike Trimboli (#2 14.2 TPP/G)
Analysis: Two starters are gone, taking 28.6 point per game with them. But that just means more scoring for Blakely, who led the team in rebounding (9 per game) as well, and the team will still compete for 1st in the conference. - Temple (Atl 10 #9) Last year: 22-12 (#51) TPP Back: 55.6% Recruiting: #142
Key returnee: Lavoy Allen (#1 16.0 TPP/G)
Key loss: Dionte Christmas (#2 14.2 TPP/G)
Analysis: No more Christmas at Temple as their leading scorer (19.5 ppg) departs with two other starters. Two double-digit scorers return in Allen and Ryan Brooks, but a big dropoff is inevitable from last year's NCAA squad. - UC Santa Barbara (Big West #1) Last year: 16-15 (#196) TPP Back: 54.7% Recruiting: #143
Key returnee: James Nunnally (#2 6.7 TPP/G)
Key loss: Chris Devine (#1 13.1 TPP/G)
Analysis: The Gauchos lose nearly half of last year's production, but with two transfers gaining eligibility—including Orlando Johnson of Loyala Marymount (12.5 ppg)—and the return of point Justin Joyner from injury, they should improve.
