The very early basketball season doesn't heat up for about a week, and as such the first week (through last Sunday) of competition doesn't yield much...competition. There is very little change from the pre-season SportsRatings Top 25.

One thing that does happen is teams that don't normally have a chance to get into the rankings can have their moment in the sun with an early upset. This year it's Portland. The Pilots are #169 in my pre-season rankings, but by knocking off former #18 Washington 80-74, they get to be #25 this week. They'd better enjoy it while they can as they've already lost to Portland State during the week...!
The only other movement comes as a result of this upset, as the other teams slide up. Wisconsin stays at #23, though, as they struggled with Long Beach State (pre-season #196) before beating them 68-61. Baylor is the beneficiary, jumping two spots to #22 after beating Paul Quinn 108-50. Even though 5-on-1 is unfair.
The rest of the field performed as expected for the most part. Duke had a scare against Rhode Island but went 3-0 for the week, while Louisville had yet to play as of Sunday. Florida State's win was unconvincing, but it was a win. Most of the field stood at 1-0 as of Sunday, and no Top 25 teams played each other.
