Bubble teams—chiefly UCLA, Indiana, and Mississippi—got some bad news as Wyoming upset San Diego State, 45-43, to get the Mountain West's automatic bid, shrinking the number of at-large bids by one.
Another bubble team, Tulsa, received bad news in a more direct form as the Golden Hurricane were defeated by Connecticut, 47-42. Tulsa was the 2nd-to-last team "in" in this morning's Dance Chance, and the loss—coupled with the shrinking at-large pool—probably dooms them to the NIT.
The bubble, this morning:
|44||11||Stephen F. Austin||Southland||25-4||17-1||35||55||-1.0||59.4||+1|
|46||12||Oklahoma St.||Big 12||17-13||8-10||48||30||7.5||57.1||-1|
|52||Rhode Island||Atlantic 10||21-8||13-5||60||59||-2.5||44.1|
UConn's win could bring further pain to bubble teams tomorrow if the Huskies manage to upset SMU and steal another bid from the at-large pool.
There was good news for the bubble, though it was minor. Auburn lost to Kentucky, preventing the Tigers from completing a 1 in 1 million run to the SEC tournament title. And Rhode Island was defeated by Dayton, 56-52, meaning the Rams have no chance work their way into the seedings.
Temple and Purdue both lost today (to SMU and Wisconsin), as expected, but neither should fall out. For UCLA, Indiana, and Ole Miss, the hope was for a Tulsa loss that would ensure that 2 of the 3 could get bid. But with Wyoming's victory, there's only one spot left. And Tulsa's loss also means that the door could shut for the remaining team tomorrow, should UConn win the AAC.
